This was created for an op-ed at GOOD Magazine, about the need for young farmers to be politically organized and active. Growing up in rural California, I always had a tremendous respect for the few remaining working farmers in our community. When he was in high school, my dad would load and haul hay bales in the summers. When I was a kid he'd play me Ry Cooder's song "The Taxes on the Farmer Feeds Us All" and describe the backbreaking labor of hauling hay. I tried to convey the power of farming, and the respect I feel for it, in the illustration.
